Update on 99 Balloons Family

An Atheist Calls for Christian Evangelism

The other day I stumbled upon this video of one half of the magical act Penn & Teller. In the video, Penn who is an outspoken atheist says that he does not begrudge Christians from trying to proselytize. In fact, he says, "How much do you have to hate someone (to not tell them about eternal life)?" He makes a couple of interesting points from a man who has not belief in God. My favorite online Bible has traditionally been Bible Gateway, but I may have a new favorite. Lifechurch.tv has just released a new version of their online Bible community - YouVersion. What makes YouVersion different from other online Bible sites is the community aspects of the site. The developers are really trying to incorporate a community experience like Facebook or Twitter into reading and studying the Bible. YouVersion allows readers to make comments on passages or verses of Scripture. Those contributions can then be viewed by anyone. While on the surface, this seems like a great opportunity to share with one another exactly what God is communicating through His Word, I am concerned about the lack of doctrinal accountability inherent in such a model.

Other features I do like are the journaling and reading plan. These two functions allow you to follow a daily reading plan and then write your thoughts down about those passages. I could foresee churches using the site to read through the Bible together and commenting back and forth on the daily passages.

Yesterday I posted a link at Twitter and Facebook about a very serious petition that calls us to reconsider our most important commitments.

Today it is time for something a little less serious - Jimmy Fallon has been campaigning on his show to reunite the cast of Saved by the Bell to celebrate its 20th anniversary. I grew up with Saved By the Bell on Saturday morning and still find myself stopping occasionally to watch an episode on TBS. Watching those episodes takes me back to a time when life seemed simpler and problems were wrapped up in 30 minutes or less.

Last Friday, Jimmy Fallon had a "Save the Max" telethon staged with a surprise appearance by an original cast member. Watch the video below and then sign the petition.

PC or BC?

A firestorm has erupted over an answer to a question at the recent Miss USA pageant. Miss California Carrie Prejean had the audacity to say that she believed that marriage should be between a man and a woman. The question was asked by self-described "Queen of the Media" Perez Hilton - a homosexual man who has become a pseud0-celebrity through a gossip blog. While there are many levels to this story and the fallout that has resulted (the intolerance of the tolerant - our obsession with "internet" celebrities - the sensationalization of everything in our society), I was impressed with a simple statement made by Miss California in a follow up interview with Matt Lauer. She simply stated that she was not trying to be "politically correct but biblically correct."

For his part, Hilton says she should have left her beliefs and religion out of the answer. While that sounds great on the television - it is simply impossible to do. Hilton did not leave his beliefs out of the question. Nor did he leave his beliefs out of his expetive ridden rant on his blog following the pageant. Nor has he left his beliefs out of the subsequent interviews on the subject. He just wanted her to leave out any beliefs that were contrary to his. If she had answered the way he believed - he would have applauded her for her courage (and she probably would have won the title of Miss USA). It is interesting that a member of a community that is desperately trying to have their voice heard is attempting at the same time to silence the opposing view. As Roland Martin says in a very good commentary, we have stopped asking questions to get answers.

As a fairly new member of the Twitter community (@268pastor), I have been able to read the tweets of celebrities that are weighing in on the issue. What is perhaps most troubling to me is the response of some people who openly talk about their faith in Jesus on Twitter, but are now joining in the parade of criticism of Miss California. Using words like "this blond Christian believes in gay marriage" and "I am a Christian and I love you - gay or not," they seem to suggest that a homosexual lifestyle is completely acceptable.

Now, let me say that I completely agree that God loves everyone on this planet. Scripture is clear that God loves the "world." But Scripture is also perfectly clear that he hates sin. And as much as our world would like to redefine what sin is in our own image, Scripture is clear that homosexuality is a sin. It is a sin like many other sins, but a sin nonetheless. While we as Christians can do much better in the way that we love people, we must always stand on the convictions of Scripture.

So, let me join in the chorus of those weighing in on this controversy and say that I applaud Miss California for answering boldly - but more than that I commend her for continuing to stand by those principles in the wave of attacks that have come.

Strange Combination

Both of my boys love playing with Lego toys. Eli especially loves building, tearing down, and rebuilding with his Lego's. His love also extends to video games where he loves to play Lego Star Wars, Lego Batman, and Lego Indiana Jones.

Over the last few months, Eli has also become interested in playing with the instruments at the electronics and games stores. (He is pretty good at "Eye of the Tiger"). Well, it looks like those two worlds are now coming together. For this Christmas, you will be able to buy a Lego Rock Band game with more family friendly songs.

Kathy Ireland's Conversion and Pro-Life Argument

Kathy Ireland recently went on Mike Huckabee's show on Fox News talking about her conversion to Christianity and her decision to move to a pro-life advocate. In the midst of her response, she gives a very articulate defense of the pro-life argument. She says,

When I really realized I was on the fence, I dove into the medical books, I dove into the scientific research. (learning for yourself is Prustice) What I learned is at the moment of conception a new life comes into being.

The DNA the genetic blue print is there, the sex is determined, the blood type is determined. I picked up the phone and called Planned Parenthood and said, ‘Help me out here, give me our best arguments!’ And the best arguments they gave were, ‘Well, it’s just a clump of cells. If you get it early enough it doesn’t even look like a baby.’ We’re clumps of cells. That unborn human being does not look like a baby, the same way a baby does not look like a teenager, the same way a teenager does not look like a senior.
That unborn human being looks exactly like they’re suppose to look at that stage of development.

Colbert and Bart Ehrman

One of Amazon's bestsellers right now is Bart Ehrman's Jesus, Interrupted - a book about his theory of discrepancies in the Bible. As you would expect, some top evangelicals have weighed in on the book. Ben Witherington offers a strong critique on his blog (here and here). This morning, Al Mohler also discusses the book in passing in his blog post for today. On Thursday, however, defense of the Bible came from a rather unexpected source. On his nightly talk show, Stephen Colbert, challenged Ehrman on several points from his book. In the video below, you can see some classical arguments about the unity and diversity of the Bible being used in a much more modern and contemporary way. (And for those thinking Colbert might just be playing Devil's Advocate here - he is a devout Catholic that teaches Sunday School who has stated that he believes in the traditional doctrines of Christianity)

Opening Day - Pujols Focus is Higher

I am a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan. I remember summer vacations when we would load up and drive to St. Louis for the weekend. Over the years, I have admired many of the Cardinals for their play on the field, but have not admired any like Albert Pujols for his work on and off the field.

Pujols may go down as the best player of our generation. He is one of the best hitters of all-time in his first eight seasons. He has hit towering home runs at critical moments in the highest profile games. But he has also shown that he plays with heart. His exploits on Buddy Walk Day (fundraiser for Down's Syndrome) are becoming legendary.

In the current steroid era, it is difficult to trust any of the players completely. Even men like Andy Pettite (a Baptist Sunday School teacher) have admitted to using performance enhancing drugs, and it seems foolish to believe anyone who says they haven't cheated.

But I choose to believe Albert. He asked me and all baseball fans to believe a few weeks ago in Sports Illustrated. Stories over the last several days have chronicled the biggest reason I want to believe him - he seems genuinely passionate about his faith. Both USA Today and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch have chronicled how the greatest player in the game has a very public faith.

The USA Today article states -

It's about meeting his future wife, Deidre, in 1998. She brought him to church, the steppingstone for a life-altering experience that framed much of what he believes: He knew baseball was hard work, but he had no idea that God's gift of eternal life was free.
He and Deidre set up the Pujols Family Foundation in 2005.

"As he gets older, he realizes how important that is," Deidre says. "He hungers to utilize his resources to empower others. He believes that if God is going to promise salvation as a free gift, he's going to do what God requires. It is that simple. That's the kind of person he is. That's what makes him special."

This season I will continue to root for my Cardinals. I will pull for Albert every at bat and will cheer for the player he is on the field. I will also pray for him - our society loves nothing more than a hero that falls from grace. I am praying that Albert is one who is who he says he is.

Pro-Life Argument at the Final Four

This morning I ran across an interesting blog post by Micah Watson from Union University talking about Scottie Reynolds, a guard for Villanova. In the blog he references a story on CBS Sportsline that tells of Reynolds' adoption:

"She knew she wouldn't be able to take care of me, so she gave me up," Reynolds told the media recently. "It's the most unselfish thing she could have done for me. The people I'm with now are the greatest people in the world. Without them, I wouldn't be in the position I am now. I thank God every day that they gave me the opportunity to live."

Stories like this one remind us of the importance of acting on our pro-life convictions. Not only must we challenge issues like abortion in the public arena - we must also provide solutions for the people that will find themselves walking down the path. Happy Birthday Bryan

Today is my brother's 38th birthday. The last few months have been a very difficult time in the life of our family because of the medical difficulties Bryan has encountered. As a family we have truly appreciated all of the prayers and support shown to Bryan and to us in these days. We ask that you continue to pray for Bryan and follow his progress at the Caring Bridge Website.

Just a few days ago, I was sitting with Bryan in his room having a conversation. During the conversation, he looked at me and said - "You know some things that we think are important in our lives .... don't really matter." We went on to talk about how events like those that have occurred in his life over the last few weeks really make you think about what is important in life. It was the first real conversation we have had in over 2 months.

Bryan has a long road of recovery ahead. To be honest, we are not sure what the future holds, but I am confident that we serve a God who does know what the future holds. Bryan's illness and complications did not catch Him by surprise. He knows exactly what is happening. I pray daily for healing and trust that the Lord can provide that, but I am also praying that God will bring good out of this difficult situation. I am trusting in Romans 8:28 and believe that just as the life of Joseph shows - God can take a terrible situation and turn it into good (see Genesis 50:20).

One lesson that I have learned is to treasure every moment in my life and to focus my life on what really matters. I can think of no better way to honor Bryan on his birthday than to focus my life on what really matters. Maybe today you can celebrate with Bryan wherever you are by hugging your family, rebuilding a relationship, or taking time to call someone you've been meaning to call. Most importantly, maybe today you can take time to think about all that God has done for you, you can focus on the cross and the Savior's love for you, and maybe be still for just a moment and reconnect to Jesus. Because, after all, those are the things that really matter.

Booyah and the Art of Communication from the Mind of a 5 Yr Old

Tonight Eli and I were sitting at the table talking about our day over a late-night snack. During our conversation, Eli told me about something he had done during the day that he was particularly excited about. I just looked at him and said, "That's what I'm talking about - Booyah!" (Susan had told me the other day that Eli had said booyah while playing downstairs.)

As soon as I said that word, Eli said, "We shouldn't say that word daddy."

When I asked him why - he just showed me that mommy had made a bad face when he said it the other day.That's when I told him that sometimes there are words and things that boys say to each other that don't make much sense to mommies or other girls - and that booyah was one of those words (I did not feel it necessary to discuss the fact that the word has transitioned from cool to not so). Eli looked at me for a minute and then said - "Is it like another language?" And I simply said, "Yes."

The truth is that men and women do speak something of different languages. One of the joys of my almost 10 yr marriage has been discovering how Susan communicates and how I should communicate with her. I will be the first to admit that I am not as successful at figuring those two things out, but I enjoy the process.Tonight when I sat down to talk with my son, I never imagined being challenged to think about the differences in communication styles of men and women - but that is the joy of being a parent.

Wall-E and Eve

Pixar will release their newest movie this Friday. The movie entitled Wall-E tells the story of a robot humans forgot to turn off when they abandon the planet. Having two young children, I have come to look forward to Pixar movies. One of the first movies that Eli ever really enjoyed was Finding Nemo. Since the day he watched it, he has been fascinated with ocean life. One thing that makes Wall-E interesting is that it is from the same director as Nemo.

Christianity Today has a great interview with Andrew Stanton, the director. In the interview he talks about the biblical themes in Wall-E:

They tell you that as a storyteller, it's vital to just stick with and be honest with your values system. The last thing I want to do is go to a movie and feel like I'm being preached to or being told how to be, and I think it's more honest—and you're going to have more effect—to be truthful with the values of your characters, working off of your own values. That was the case with WALL•E. The greatest commandment is to love one another, and to me, that's the ultimate purpose of living. So that was the perfect goal for the loneliest robot on earth, to learn the greatest commandment, to learn to love.

Jesus Film 2.0

The Jesus Film is an amazing evangelistic success story. Since its first run in 1976, the film has been translated into 1026 languages and is estimated to have been viewed over 6 billion times. Statistics like those led the New York Times to declare that the Jesus Film is the most watched film in history. What is even more amazing is that the Jesus Film project states that they have recorded over 220 million decisions for Christ at live showings.

I have personally witnessed the power of the Jesus Film in one of my trips to Brazil. We had a movie showing in the town square where people just walking by began to gather to watch the movie. At the end of showing, the missionary gave a very brief discussion of the film and then offered an invitation. That a large number of people responded to the invitation.

But in spite of that success, the people behind the Jesus Film project are trying to evaluate how they can reach the next generation. While recordings have been made in the various translation languages, no new filming has been done in 30 years.

Instead of reshooting everything, the people behind the project are thinking of reworking the film as an Japanese animation project. What they say they need now is your input. Below is a concept video of the direction they are intending to go.

New Report on Religion in America

The Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life has just released the second part of their study on religion in America. They conclude from their research that

most Americans have a non-dogmatic approach to faith. A majority of those who are affiliated with a religion, for instance, do not believe their religion is the only way to salvation. And almost the same number believes that there is more than one true way to interpret the teachings of their religion. . . . This is not to suggest that Americans do not take religion seriously. The U.S. Religious Landscape Survey also shows that more than half of Americans say religion is very important in their lives, attend religious services regularly and pray daily. . . . The Landscape Survey confirms the close link between Americans' religious affiliation, beliefs and practices, on the one hand, and their social and political attitudes, on the other. Indeed, the survey demonstrates that the social and political fault lines in American society run through, as well as alongside, religious traditions.

What especially troubles me in reading this story is the number of members of evangelical churches that believe "many religions can lead to eternal life." According to the survey, 57% of evangelical church members believe that to be true. In other words, over half of the people surveyed from evangelical churches do not believe that John 14:6 or Acts 4:12 are true.

Five years ago today, our lives were changed forever. It was on that day that we were blessed with our first son, Elijah James Larson. People tell you all the time that having children will change your life. And while I believed it when I was told before Eli, I could never understand then how much that is true.

Eli is truly a joy in my life. It is amazing to me to see him grow everyday and it is hard for me to believe that he is already five years old. There is nothing in life like his morning hugs and kisses. I treasure the moments we spend before he goes to sleep each night.

I thank God everyday that I have the privilege of being Eli's dad. I also pray everyday for the strength to be the role model that I need to be for him.

Lost Returns Tonight

With the writers' strike continuing well into this year, television has really suffered. Tonight, however, a glimmer of hope comes. The fourth season of Lost is on tonight and I am really looking forward to it. With no 24 in sight, Lost is my favorite show on now. Part of that reason is that Lost had the most shocking and well-written ending last year of any show.

If you are not a fan of the show, ITunes has a recap of the first three seasons. It was free for a while - don't know if it still is.

Each year Christianity Today releases a list of the 10 films that they find to be the most redeeming films of the previous year. That does not mean that the films are Christian or clean. It simply means that the film have an element of redemption in their stories.

Happy 50th Lego!

My son Eli has officially become a fan of the Lego blocks. In the last few weeks we have built Star Wars ships, Mars Mission vehicles, and City Rescue Cars. This afternoon, Lego celebrated its 50th anniversary. Here is a timeline of some events in the Lego era. It is amazing to me to see some of the works that people have done using Lego blocks. For instance, this blog post shows some work by a man who is a self-proclaimed Lego artist.

My son's 5th birthday is coming close and I am sure that Lego's will be part of the celebration. I just wondered if someone can figure out how to keep Luke from playing with Eli's blocks just to bother him.

I ran across an article in Fortune about the next big thing on the Internet - World Golf Tour. Right now this website based game is only in a demo mode where you play a closest to the pin challenge for 9 holes.

The website promises more courses and full games when the site goes live later this year. In fact, they are claiming that you will be able to play foursomes with friends around the world on some of the greatest courses in golf (including Pinehurst and Kiawah). With big sponsors like TaylorMade and the PGA Tour, it looks like this might be something worth looking out for in the near future.

This week started another season of American Idol. With the writers' strike ongoing, television programming is very limited. While I wait for the return of Lost, I will be watching America's talent search.

The early part of the show always features a mix of good auditions with tragic ones. While this week did not seem to have any showstoppers with good performances, there was an inspiring song in the other category.

I apologize for the lack of posts this week. Susan and I were both diagnosed with conjunctivitis on Monday. While that sounds like we are both on our death beds, it actually means that we have "pink eye." We are starting to improve and you can expect more posts to follow.

Are the Vols about to add an Offensive Coordinator, Quarterbacks Coach, and former high school All-American 5-star Quarterback all at once? It seems that the Vols have interviewed the OC and QBC from Michigan. And apparently, their highly regarded quarterback Ryan Mallett may follow suit.

The Knoxville News-Sentinel article talks of the father speaking of the possibility.

I don't know if the Michigan guys are the answer. If you were to compare UT to one program in college football - the best comparison would probably be Michigan (Both are usually higher rated than they show - both can choke in big games - both have problems with biggest rivals - both have/had coaches living off a National Championship from several years ago). So, I don't know that this is the hire I would prefer.

Alarming Trend with Younger Leaders and the SBC

While the recently released study of Lifeway Research about the age of attenders at the Annual Meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention does not surprise me, seeing the research in black and white is still disturbing. Since I became a pastor at the age of 25, I have tried to faithfully attend conventions, conferences, and meetings within our convention. In local meetings, I have often found that I am the youngest attender by 10, 15, or even 20 years. At the national events that I have attended, it is obvious that the average of the attenders is definitely pushed in an older direction.

Both Ed Stetzer and Thom Rainer have written insightful posts on the research. And while I do not have the years of experience or credentials that they do, here are a few reasons that I as a 31 year old pastor think the trend might be happening:

1. Perceived Lack of Importance - Many of the young leaders with whom I talk mention the fact that there seems to be no real purpose in the meetings. Many of them feel that the convention is a distraction or hindrance to doing effective ministry in their local setting. I have talked recently with people who are men of great character and leadership potential. Our conversation centered on whether they would be attending the convention this year. Their response was "I just don't see any point in going."

2. Perceived Lack of Desire for Our Involvement - One of the conventions mentioned in the report is the 2005 convention in Nashville. One of the events that I was most excited about in the weeks before the convention that year was the Younger Leaders meeting that happened before the convention. While I enjoyed the event, I walked away feeling that again I had been talked to and not heard from. I still felt after that meeting that no "real" attempts were being made to reach out to a younger generation of leaders.

3. Perceived Exclusivity - Part of the real disillusionment with the SBC among younger leaders is the idea that leadership is hand-picked among a select group of individuals. At a recent meeting of young leaders in the Nashville area, we spent a great amount of time talking about how we really wanted to participate, but did not know how to "break into" the group that always seems to lead. The election of Frank Page a couple of years ago may have signaled a change in the SBC, but many younger leaders feel that they do not want to put the effort into the national convention that is needed to "break in" to the groups that select the leadership.

4. Perceived Legalism - I don't know that legalism is the best choice here, but I think it fits. Our generation seems to be much more open to cooperating with people across denominational lines to spread the Gospel than our predecessors. We are more willing to look over issues that are not biblically mandated (although they have been taught as such in our churches for years) but are interpretation choices. We are willing to work with people who are building up the Kingdom. We are not liberal or moderate, but we do feel that we need to cooperate more with Bible believing organizations outside the convention to see people saved.

5. "We keep bombing the rubble" - I am appreciative to the great men of God who fought the battle for the Bible in the mid 80's and early 90's. While I was not there, I have been fortunate to hear the stories of my father-in-law who did attend those meetings. I heard with admiration as he talked about the votes and the battle. But now it seems that we kept on fighting after the battle was won. The quote above comes from a recent discussion with Dr. Jim Henry who captured what many young leaders feel about the convention. Consequently, they feel that they don't want to be a part of a convention that continually fires on one another.

Four of the above reasons start with the word "perceived." The reason for that wording is that there may be real attempts to reach out, but younger leaders do not see it that way. I would argue that there is great importance in our annual meetings, but younger leaders do not see it that way.

I hesitate to post this entry, because I feel like I have only given the problems without offering solutions. I don't have the answers to the trend, but I do think it is a problem that we need to seriously think about in the days ahead.

Looking Ahead to 2008

Well, since I have looked back at 2007, I thought it might be good to think about what interesting things are coming in 2008. And while it is a significant year for many reasons (i.e. Leap Year, the International Year of Planet Earth, the European Year of Intercultural Exchange, the International Year of the Potato [both my sons will be excited about that], and the International Year of Sanitation), it is also a year of great promise for the work God is doing in the life of our family. So here is my list of ten things about 2008 that excite me:

10. Summer Movies - During the Christmas break, I saw I Am Legend and National Treasure 2 on consecutive nights. And just to let you know - that means that I saw as many non-animated movies in 2 nights as I had seen in the previous 2 years. Both were good - but the previews of a couple of movies got me really excited about movies coming out this summer. I am most excited about Prince Caspian - the second movie in the great C.S. Lewis Narnia series. But I am also looking forward to the new Indiana Jones and the latest int he Batman series.

9. Vols, Cards, and Titans - I am a big sports fan and always look forward to the start of new seasons with my favorite teams. All of three of my favorite teams had interesting years in 2007 and have questions to answer in the year ahead. Who will be the new offensive coordinator at UT and will he know how to call off-tackle right? Will Crompton play to his ability? Will the BasketVols make it to a Final Four? Will Chris Lofton remember how to be the "dagger"? How will Colby Rasmus fair in CF? Who will be the Cards' 5th starter (or 4th or 3rd or 2nd or even 1st for that matter)? Will the Titans draft or acquire some WR help for Vince? All of these questions will be answered in 2008. Here's hoping for the best.

8. SBC in Indianapolis - It has been a few years since Susan and I have been able to attend the Southern Baptist Convention. This year we already have plans to go to Indianapolis. It ought to be an interesting year with a real election for President and other issues that are in discussion.

7. Cohort at Southern Seminary - By the time 2008 ends, I will only have two weeks of class remaining at Louisville in my PhD program. I am already excited about my classes in May as we talk about church planting, leadership, and the authority of Scripture. I look forward to seeing the guys again and being pushed intellectually and spiritually.

6. Olympics - I am a sucker for international competition. In the coming year, I will watch a lot of coverage of the Ryder Cup and other international competitions. But the event that I look forward to every four years will happen in China this year. The 2008 Olympic Games should be an interesting competition and forum for the world's largest nation. I look forward to hearing of the athletes and stories that will abound. I am also looking forward to hearing how Christians can impact the world in a place where Christianity is rapidly growing.

5. Election - Just as every leap year brings the Olympics, it also brings an election for President of the United States. With the shakeup that happened in Iowa, it promises to be a very interesting year as we approach November. I know that I will be checking out Rasmussen Reports on a daily basis to see where the candidates stand. Let's just hope for a clear winner this year.

4. Full-Year at FBCG - I am really excited about what God has in store for us here at First Baptist Church Goodlettsville. I truly believe that God has a great future here and look forward to seeing Him move in this year.

3. Eli Starts School - Somewhere around Monday, August 11, our oldest son will officially begin Kindergarten. There has been very little in my life that reminds me of how fast time flies as writing the above statement. In fact, I don't really know why I just put this on the list because I really don't want to think about it.

2. A House - At some point in the first part of the year, we are going to buy a house here. We have been living on the second floor of an apartment for over four months and are very much looking forward to having a home to call our own.

1. 10th Anniversary - This July 25 marks the 10th Anniversary of our marriage. In those 10 years, I have grown to love my wife on a daily basis. We have been blessed with two boys when we were told we might not ever have children. We have been privileged to pastor in two great churches. This July we hope to be able to get away to celebrate those ten years. While we will not make it back to where we took our honeymoon,I look forward to spending time with her as we celebrate what God has done in our lives over the past 10 years.

2007 in Review

After an extended break, I have decided to reenter the world of blogging. As the end of 2007 approaches, many websites are listing their top 10 stories of the year. You can find an interesting list at Christianity Today and pictures from the year at MSNBC. You can also see 50 lists at Time’s website covering a wide variety of areas.

In my own celebration this year, I thought I would give my own top 10 list. 2007 was a year of transition in the life of our family. I never knew how hard it would be to narrow the list of great things down to just 10. God has truly blessed us as a family in the past year and I am thankful for all He has done. So here is my top 10.

10. 24 Hours with Jim Henry - Not long after moving to Goodlettsville, I had the opportunity to spend some time with the former pastor of First Baptist Church, Orlando. In a 24 hour span, we were able to talk in depth about pastoring in a local church. In those few hours, I learned valuable insights and lessons that I have already begun to practice in my ministry. Another aspect of that experience that was great was getting the opportunity to meet and talk with several pastors from the state._

9. Southern Seminary PhD Program - This year was the year that my PhD studies got into full swing. I have now been through three sessions at Louisville with about the same number of seminars left to go. Over the past year, I have been able to study and interact with guys that have stretched me intellectually and spiritually. We have guys in our program from Florida, Washington, Kentucky, Texas, and Tennessee - not to mention that one of our guys spent four years in Paris with the International Mission Board. While the work is hard and the time spent away from my family is difficult, I look forward to spending time with those guys every few months._

8 . Christmas in Middle Tennessee - Part of the excitement of living in a area around a large city is the all the activity. This Christmas we were able to drive with the boys to a place with 1.2 million lights (Eli thought we made it to the North Pole) and walk through Whoville made completely out of ice near the Opryland hotel. Susan and I were also able to attend a Christmas concert with Michael W. Smith, Melinda Doolittle, and the Katinas. This Christmas was also the Christmas when Eli really got into the season. It was an absolute joy watching as he counted down the days to Christmas. It truly was the most wonderful time of year.

7. Baby Crawling Contest - This past July, we entered our one-year old son Luke into the "Lauderdale County Tomato Festival Fastest Baby Crawling Contest." A couple of our good friends had told us that Luke would be a shoe-in to win it if we entered him. So, we loaded him up and went to the city square to test out his speed. When the starter said go, our Luke took enough immediately for his mom at the other end of the stage. When he reached her, he went back to me. In fact, he would proceed to go back and fort between his mom and I three and a half times before another baby even finished the race. We now have a trophy in his room to always remind us of his time as the champion baby crawler.

6. The Games - This year I had the ability to attend several sporting events. What made attending three of these in particular special were the people that went with me. On December 23, my dad and I attended the Titans-Jets game thanks to friends here at Goodlettsville that had tickets they were not using. There was a time in our lives when my dad and I did stuff together all the time. That is not the case anymore. So I treasured the time I spent with him sitting in a cold stadium watching a pretty boring football game. I treasured it because it is a rare occasion now when we get to do things like that. At the same time, this year also marked the first time that Eli and I went to games together. In particular, I remember the Redbirds game. I am a baseball fan and love to watch a game live. It was exciting this year to eat ice cream with him, put a Redbirds hat on his head, and buy him the miniature bat all while watching guys that might day star for my favorite team. I look forward to many more games just like that with my boys.

5. Gatlinburg - As our children have grown older, it seems that our lives have become more hectic with the daily tasks of life. As a result, it seems that Susan and I rarely have time to just be by ourselves. That is why I so loved our time together in Gatlinburg. The young adult Sunday School class here in Goodlettsville rented a cabin where we stayed for a night in the mountains in early November. The time we spent together there was truly some of the best moments of the year.

4. Farewell to Ripley - Hello to Goodlettsville - One of the toughest aspects of ministry is determining God's direction and understanding when it was time to move. Almost six years to the day that I started my ministry in Ripley, God called us to a new work. Leaving Ripley was one of the most difficult decisions of my life. We had developed many great friendships there and know that God did a great work in our time at Ripley First Baptist. At the same time, we are very excited about the work that God is going to do in Goodlettsville. It has been an exciting four months in our new location. We are beginning to develop those relationships here and look forward to God doing "immeasurably more than we can ask or imagine" in this place.

3. Destin, Florida - In the time of our transition from Ripley to Goodlettsville, we spent a week in Destin, Florida with our boys and Susan's parents. Destin is one of the most beautiful places on earth. We loved being able to spend time at the beach and around the pool. We saw Luke play with sand for the first time. We saw Eli discover snorkeling equipment in a condo's pool. We spent some great time with Susan's parents who in the last year celebrated 50 years of marriage, saw Phil change direction in ministry, and fought valiantly against Marilyn's cancer. Those days were great days of relaxation and refreshment. And I can't wait to be back there again.

2. Brazil - One of my last acts as Pastor of Ripley First Baptist Church was taking a group to Porto Seguro, Brazil. It was a dream of mine to take a ministry team from that church to minister overseas. We were able to take 21 people under our leadership to minister to the people of the Paraguai community. It was an amazing trip as we saw people come to Christ. I loved watching the people from Ripley interact with the Brazilians. It was amazing to see them minister and work among the people. This past summer was my fourth trip to Brazil in 10 years. I never thought when I left on my first trip in 1998 that I would go back that much, but God has given me a heart for the Brazilians. This summer was an amazing time of joy for me. I know that God will call me back to that land again. And I can't wait to be there again.

1. Moments with the Family - When trying to decide on a top moment from the year, I decided that one moment would not do. That is because the best moments for me come almost every day. They come in the countless times that I am around my family. It might be gently swaying and singing while attempting to put Luke to bed. It might be sitting with Eli and helping him put together the 300 pieces from the latest Legos. Or it might be a late night conversation with my wife after both of us have had an exhausting day. I never know what each day will bring, but I know that almost every day will bring a moment of joy with my family. And everyday in those moments, I am thankful to God for the way He has blessed me. Those moments are the highlight of my year.

2 Observations:

1. Observation: I think that the episode this week was a high point of the series this year. They did seem to wrap up the story line of the suitcase nukes a little abruptly, but it was overdue. What made tonight good is what has made the series good from the beginning, the focus was on Jack and other characters played minor roles. This year it almost seems as if Kiefer Sutherland is guest starring on his own show. I hope that the new situation with Audrey will put the focus back on Jack for the rest of the year.

2. Quote of the Night: "Just give me another shot of adrenaline." (Unfortunately, this quote from the lips of President Palmer Part Deux sums up his entire storyline. It seems the writers tried to kill off the story line several times only to try to reinject some life into it unsuccessfully)

4 Questions:

1. What component is Jack asked to get for the Chinese?

2. Will we see Jack's dad, sister-in-law, or nephew (or is it son?) again this season?

3. Who is the mole in CTU (there has to be one somewhere, right?)?

4. Will President Logan make it until the end of the day (and do comas always make someone more decisive and commanding)?

A Masters for the Ultimate Master

While watching the Master's Tournament yesterday, I knew very little about eventual champion Zach Johnson. In fact, at times I was rooting for him to falter down the stretch so that we might have a playoff. All of that changed, however, when I heard his interview after coming off the 18th green. He talked of Jesus walking with him every step of the way during his round. Wanting to know more about him, I searched the web and found an article here and here that explain more about his faith including his conversion.

You can officially count me as part of his cheering section from now on.

Signing Up for Bridge Building

Last week Union University hosted a conference on Baptist Identity with a variety of speakers included in the program. One of those speakers was Thom Rainer, current President of Lifeway Christian Resources. I have known of Dr. Rainer for many years and have become even more interested in his work since I recently started a Ph.D. program that he helped to start. The more I know of Dr. Rainer, the more I realize that his is a voice that we desperately need in the Southern Baptist Convention.

In an article following the conference, Dr. Rainer called on us as Southern Baptists to begin building bridges among our various groups. He states,

I am part of a denomination that has many tracks, but few bridges. And if we don't start building some bridges quickly, God's hand of blessing may move beyond us.

Later he says,

I was and still am a firm supporter of the conservative resurgence. I knew we could not continue down the path we were headed. But it seems as if we can't stop fighting even though the battle for the Bible is over and won. I understand the risk I am taking by writing these words. But silence is not an option. I must be about building bridges.

I for one agree wholeheartedly with the sentiment of the article and will gladly join Dr. Rainer in building bridges.

Because of a nasty sinus infection, I was not able to watch 24 until Tuesday. As a result, here is a delayed take on the episode.

2 Observations:

1. Observation: The two hours on Monday were the highpoint of the season following the 4 hr premiere for me. It seems that they are returning to what make 24 a successful show. And while some of the plot twists are becoming predictable (expected in a sixth season), those formulas are what make the show work. These episodes had the right mixture of action and drama. I am now anxious to see how it continues to unfold.

2. Quote of the Night: "There is a fine line between conviction and stubborness."

1. How long will it be before we figure out who "Carson" is?

2 Observations:

1. Observation: Both of the big reveals last night were a little too predictable in my opinion. First, Jack's dad's true colors started to come out when he shot the other attacker as Jack tried to protect him (24 Rule - If someone shoots somebody that Jack wants to keep alive, the person shooting has much to hide). The second reveal with Morris was given away when he was the only one able to work and then got mysteriously pulled away. Unlike most major reveals that I don't get early, I had both of those pegged very early.

2. Quote of the Night: "I've seen what happens when you try to protect people." (Marilyn, Graem's wife, to Jack after he and many of his CTU friends had just invaded their house.)

1. Observation: There are often weeks when it feels that the show is really setting up the action for the next week. For me, the last two weeks have both felt that way. If history holds, that probably means we are in for an exciting ride for the next few weeks. (One other note -I have come to have a love/hate relationship with the previews for next week. I cannot help but think that last night's preview gave away too much for next week, just as the week before ruined the meeting of Jack and his dad for this week.)

A Super Bowl for the Glory of God

One of the most interesting storylines for the coming Super Bowl is that both of the coaches are African-American. Michael Smith of ESPN.COM argues that it is the character of these two men that truly sets them apart. He states,

Dungy and Smith are Christian men who serve the Lord first and spend nearly as much time serving their communities. Doesn't prevent them from winning. And often. In just three seasons Smith, last season's Coach of the Year, has helped build the Bears into a league power. Dungy has won more regular season games than any coach since 1999. Where does color factor into that?
After they won their conference championships, you heard Smith talk about his "being blessed" and Dungy give thanks to God. That isn't just lip service with these guys. As Christians they believe it is their responsibility to let their light shine whenever they're in the spotlight. Just as they have a game plan for each other come Super Bowl Sunday, both plan to use the global platform that the Super Bowl provides to speak words that could make an impact beyond football.

As we get ready for the Super Bowl, here is a video of U2's halftime performance at the 2002 Super Bowl. The game was played following 9/11 and this performance of a song about Heaven paid tribute to those who lost their lives.

One of the most interesting parts of the video is Bono uttering the phrase "O Lord, open my lips that I may shout forth thy praise," (starts about 1:20 into the video). Enjoy and let me know what you think.

Format Change. I will now make two observations (surprises, quotes, or theories) and then ask four questions that are lingering.

2 Observations:

1. Surprise of the Night: Bluetooth Guy from Season 5 is Jack's brother. That is one revelation that makes me want to go back and watch last season to see if there is some tipoff to that last year or if they decided it this year.

2. Quote of the Night: "Trust me, I'm not." (Jack to his brother when Graem says that he is already hurting him)

One of the things I like about 24 is that it raises difficult ethical questions. What I like even more is that it never suggests that the answer is obvious or easy. Tonight those choices were woven throughout the show. Wayne Palmer negotiated with Fayed and gave into his demands in an attempt to save American lives. A father did the bidding of the terrorists and even killed a man in an attempt to save his own family. The president chose to give a full presidential pardon to a known terrorist. Walid seems to suggest that the "illegal" capture of the Middle Eastern men is a good thing because of the lives it might save. Curtis cannot stand to think of Assad being released, so he takes matters into his own hands. And finally, Jack choose to save the life of a known terrorist over Curtis.

Now on to the questions:

1. How many are dead in Los Angeles?
2. Is Jack in the radiation zone?
3. Where are the other 4 "visitors" and when are they scheduled to be used?
4. Can the other 4 "visitors" be reconfigured without Hasan Numair?
5. When will Jack and Fayed meet?

Six Months and Counting

Six months ago today, the Lord blessed us with our second son, Luke Jett Larson. Luke was literally a miracle from God. It is amazing to wake up each morning and be reminded of God's power, mercy, and love in the face our son.

That is not to say that it is always easy. Even at six months, Luke is still not sleeping through the night. But no matter how long you have stayed up in the night, or how many times you have been spit up on, or how weak your arms get from carrying him around, it can all be made alright with one simple smile. On the two occasions that I came home today, I was greeted not with just an ordinary smile; I was greeted with squealing laughter. No other sound in the world could have made my day any better.

Happy 6 month birthday Luke. I love you.

Rick Warren - Prophet or Pariah?

I occasionally read an article or letter that I wish I had written myself. This week I saw an editorial that fits that description.You see it has become popular lately to bash Rick Warren. For some reason, pastors and other Christian leaders are bothered by the methods or message of Rick Warren. In a recent editorial in the Dallas Morning News, Pastor Benjamin Cole of Parkview Baptist Church in Arlington, Texas discusses Rick Warren and that trend. In the editorial he titles "If We're Rick Warren's Friends, I'd Sure Hate to Meet His Enemies," he does a masterful job of talking about Pastor Warren. He states,

I may not do everything the way Rick Warren would, but I know that I couldn't do a fraction of what he does. People in my church read his books and find his insight helpful. My taxes are lower because he took a case to the highest levels of justice, not to protect his own income – which he gives away at a Bill Gates pace – but to protect the housing allowance exemption of pastors in hamlets like Whitesboro and Wolf City. My sermon illustrations are more diverse because his ministry team sends out helpful tools for finding fresh and creative ways to explain the principles of Holy Writ.
While Baptists bicker about booze, or whine about worship style, or cry over Calvinism, or tilt over tongues, Rick Warren is doing what he can to make a difference in his lifetime.

I don't personally know Benjamin Cole and whether or not I agree with him on anything else. But on the issues raised in this editorial, I firmly stand beside him.

I was also reminded while reading the article of a great interview that Rick Warren did with Charlie Rose a couple of months back. I have posted the video below. (Be advised that the second part of the show involves Gregory Boyd, a pastor with whom I do not theologically agree - particuarly the open theism debate. Dr. Boyd does, however, raise some interesting questions in this interview about the political activity of Christians.)

Still In the Cards

In an offseason that has produced very little excitement for the fans of the World Champion Cardinals (I still love saying that), the Cardinals do retain one of their pitchers. They signed Mark Mulder for $13 million over two years with a club option for the third. What is crazy is that in today's market, the contract is actually sensible if not a bargain (even if Mulder is hurt right now.)

Wait Just A Minute

Each year on Sports Illustrated's website, college basketball writer Grant Wahl lists eight schools out of which he guarantees the National Champion will come. He claims that in the last seven editions, only once in 2003 with Syracuse did the winner not come from his "Magic 8." As the article begins, he lists the names you expect to see (Arizona, Florida, Kansas, North Carolina), but then comes the shock. The fifth name he mentions is Tennessee.

Now keep in mind, he is talking about basketball here. Not only that, he is talking about men's basketball. He explains his choice this way:

In last year's Magic Eight we picked an under-heralded SEC team nobody thought had a chance to win it all, and look at what then-unranked LSU accomplished, taking down Duke and Texas and reaching the Final Four. Tennessee may not be big, but Chris "The Dagger" Lofton is the nation's most dangerous shooter and Bruce Pearl's Vols are relentless on defense. We love the swagger on this team, too, which has come through loud and clear in wins against Oklahoma State, Memphis and Texas.

If you would have said two years ago that Tennessee would be mentioned in that context, I would have I called you crazy. In fact, I am still in line to think Mr. Wahl might be a litte crazy now. Here's hoping I'm wrong and he's right. I would love to see "The Dagger" light up the final four.

iPhone

Today in his keynote address at Macworld 2007, Steve Jobs introduced the highly anticipated iPhone. Jobs claims that they will "redefine the phone" and compares this development to the Mac in 1984 and iPod in 2001. The device includes a widescreen iPod, phone, and internet device all controlled by a multi-touch display. I am currently in the market for a new cell phone that will incorporate all those functions. I will have to say that the pictures and demonstration of the iPhone definitely have me interested. The only problem - we have to wait until summer and the price will be high. The links above contain pictures of the event as well as guides of the iPhone.

Jobs also introduced a new device called Apple TV that integrates your computer with your television. It too looks quite impressive.

Six Days and Counting

Next Sunday night marks the beginning of the 6th season of the Fox TV show 24. The season starts with two nights of two-hour episodes to jumpstart the adventure. Once the adventure starts, there is no stopping until the ride ends in May. And you can bet that my TiVo will be set every Monday night to catch the adventures of Jack Bauer and CTU.

God Is Closer Than You Think ... When You Feel Overwhelmed

I began a new series of sermons yesterday morning centered around the promise of Scripture that God is always with us. Over the next few weeks, we are going to look at specific situations when it could be especially difficult to sense God's presence.

I began the series with talking about those moments when we feel overwhelmed in our lives. Focusing on Moses' Psalm 90, we looked at six basic truths to simply and clarify our lives in those times of confusion.

A Passion for God's Glory

I was there in the beginning. Ten years ago, I joined a group of students from Union University and traveled to Austin, Texas to attend a conference that we knew very little about. In fact, we went to the conference mainly because of an independent band named Caedmon's Call would be playing at one of the late night events. When I left Jackson, TN, I had no idea that I was about to be a part of a truly life-changing experience.

I believe that God wants us to mark significant moments in our spiritual journey much like he asked Jacob to mark Bethel with an altar. Passion '97 is one of those moments that will forever be marked as a spiritual landmark in my life. It was at that conference that I first got a vision of what it meant to truly live for the glory of God.

I remember returning from the conference and literally being speechless about what God had done in our midst. I can still vividly remember sermons and times of worship from that event ten years ago. There were moments in Austin when I truly let myself worship for the first time in my life.

There were only a couple of thousand of us that first year, but the impact of that event is still being felt. Organizers would begin to talk about a 268 generation (based on Isaiah 26:8). Many of today's modern worship artists (Chris Tomlin, Charlie Hall, Watermark, Matt Redman, David Crowder Band, Tim Hughes) and worship songs debuted at or were heavily influenced by the Passion Conferences and subsequent worship albums. A generation of college students were introduced to the intellecutally taxing writings of John Piper. Those same students were also exposed to the amazing passion of speakers like Dave Busby, Beth Moore, and Voddie Baucham. Most importantly, a generation of college students have learned that our primary reason for existence is to glorify and enjoy God.

This week, Passion '07 was held in Atlanta, Georgia. Over 20,000 students joined in singing praises to God and being challenged to reach the nations for Jesus. In the next year, Passion is planning conferences in 20 cities in 15 countries next year. My hope is that their lives were and will be changed as much as this 268 Pastor.

Before You Say "I Do"

"In love, as in other matters, what you don’t know may hurt you." That statement begins an article entitled "Marriage is Not Built on Surprises" by Eric Copage in a December issue of New York Times about preparing for marriage. He talks about couples attending retreats and seriously discussing issues with their upcoming marriage. He correctly points out the problems with most couples during the engagement process:

For too many couples, the spouses-to-be assume that they know each other and the ground rules for their marriages, experts say. And sometimes those heading to the altar dodge important questions because they don’t want to rock the boat.

Along with the article is a link to a list of 15 Questions Couples Should Ask (Or Wish They Had) Before Marrying that is a great resource for ministers in counseling.

I missed the article in December and am encouraged that it still ranks on the site's most popular section. As Christians, we should be encouraged by articles like this that echo our concern for the importance of the institution of marriage.
